By Jennifer Peat, Elizabeth Elliott, Louise Baur, Victoria Keena
Paperback 292 pages (July 3, 2002)
Publisher: BMA Professional Division Publications

This comprehensive and practical book covers the basics of grammar as well as the broad brush issues such as writing a grant application and selling to your potential audience. The clear explanations are expanded and lightened with helpful examples and telling quotes from the giants of good writing. These experienced writers and teachers make scientific writing enjoyable.
I was apprehensive about reading yet another manual on how to write a scientific paper. Over the years, I have read many “how to” books that have verged on the mundane as a result of attempting to convey large quantities of simple information to a scientific community with as many divergent interests as agendas. Fortunately, my prejudices were dispelled when I sat down to review this entertaining book.
Although simple and perfunctory in its opening chapter, the book launches us on an exciting journey into the mysteries surrounding the writing of a scientific paper. Each chapter is introduced with a set of unique objectives. The book takes us through the process of writing and finishing a paper; the review and editorial process, and some other selected issues.
The book then goes on to explore the basic tenets of English grammar. Detailed advice is given for improving one’s ability to write, with lucid and practical instructions, and examples in areas such as pronouns and determiners, and conjunctions and prepositions. Discussion demystifies why some terms used in everyday English may not be relevant in a scientific paper.
There is also an excellent coverage of relevant websites and quotes from published authors that add to the book’s overall quality.
It would appear much effort has gone into writing this book. For the novice scientific author, thesis writer or clinician, it is an ideal guide and reference source.
