MCMXC a.D. was somewhat of a blessing for Cretu. He had previously released several
albums under his real name, but was now in a situation where he felt all dried up and out
of new ideas. He then developed a creative philosophy that should prove to be the
beginning of something great: "Old rules and habits must be rejected and dismissed, so
that something new can be created.". The Enigma music project was born, and the first
album immediately garnered attention from everywhere in the world due to it's unique
style. Many people still consider MCMXC a.D. the best Enigma album created.

This album established many things that should prove to be recurring on the later albums
as well. It's a very sensual album, spiced up with samples of several Gregorian chants,
odd sounds and samples. It also introduced the now famous piece of music which in one
form or another tends to begin and end all albums released under the project. In a stroke
of genius, Cretu who was fresh out of ideas had gone and created a sensational album.

Cretu is credited as Curly M.C. on the album. One of the reasons for this is that he
didn't want people to know who had created the music, but due to the attention and
success of the album it became impossible to hide. Two other people contributed to
realizing the album on a practical level. One of them is David Fairstein who has also
worked on later albums, and the other is Frank Peterson who is credited as F. Gregorian.
Peterson was later ousted from the Enigma project after a brush with Cretu over some
music samples he had used for his other work without permission.

The Cross of Changes would be the album that firmly established Enigma with the
mainstream music audience around the world. The smash hit Return To Innocence was
absorbed by millions of listeners, and more people opened their eyes and ears for Cretu's
stunning project. The music still dealt with what some people perceive as touchy issues,
this time with slight touch eastern inspiration added to the formula used on MCMXC a.D..
It was clear that we would hear much more of Michael Cretu's mysterious music project in
the future.

Before this album was released, Cretu was asked to compose the music for the feature film
Sliver, starring Sharon Stone. While Cretu turned down the project due to schedule
constraints, he did submit a couple of songs for the film. One of them is Age of
Loneliness (Carly's Song), and it's featured on The Cross of Changes. A nice detail is
that the song's style stays true not only to the film's theme, but also the theme of the
album.

Roughly three years after The Cross of Changes, Michael Cretu released the third album in
the Enigma project, which had been firmly established around the world with the first two
outings. While staying true to the distinctive Enigma formula with mysterious music
blended with various samples and odd sounds, Cretu managed to keep the project fresh and
new at the same time. People quickly opened their eyes for the smash hit Beyond The
Invisible, but the entire album was probably the smoothest overall offering in the
project at the time.

People where beginning to wonder why Cretu had never taken the project on tour around the
world, but the ever busy musician simply prefers to stay at home and make music. Not only
for himself, but also for the various other artists he produces including his German wife
Sandra. Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi which is French and translates to The King is dead,
long live the King nudged the project slightly in a more modern direction, which is
something that would be fully evident on the next installment.

When it released, The Screen Behind The Mirror was by many perceived as the most mature
album released by Enigma. It built on the more modern theme that was established by Le
Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi around 4 years earlier. This 4th installment quite extensively
featured samples from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, but the album also sported other tried
and tested samples and sounds as well. As with the third album, Cretu had created a very
smooth and intelligent music experience that was clearly as enigmatic as his previous
releases.

Amongst some of the newer faces to notably help out on The Screen Behind The Mirror was
Jens Gad. Cretu and Gad had been doing quite a bit of music together before the release
of the fourth Enigma installment, including an album called The Energy of Sound released
under the name Trance Atlantic Air Waves. Their collaboration on the Enigma project
should prove to be a good idea, and it made for yet another successful album.

This album is the most complete since E1 in the respect of songs, positions of each
track, the intertwine of each track (cross fades)...it leaves you with a completed
feeling at the end. It tells a story, a trip, a voyage, a dream or what ever you take
from it. The secret is that like E1 before it, your stomach churns as each track passes
as you do not know what to expect next, and this is where Enigma draws much of its
success - it follows no styles or patterns and has to be viewed upon as a book - each
chapter holding it's own story never knowing what’s coming next.
