American Civil War Armies (1) : Confederate Troops (Men at Arms Series, 170)

ISBN: 0850456797
Author: Philip Katcher
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

When the Southern states seceded to form their own government in 1861, one of their first moves was to organise an army. The South's fighting men served from the time of their enlistment until the end of the war, receiving poor rations, and even worse clothing – and this despite the fact that one of the first steps taken by the new army was to design a uniform and establish standards for accoutrements and weapons. In this first of five volumes examining American Civil War armies, Philip Katcher profiles the uniforms issued by the national Confederate government to its artillery, cavalry and infantry troops.

American Civil War Armies (4) : State Troops (Men-At-Arms Series, 190)

ISBN: 0850457475
Author: Philip Katcher
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

The War between the States' is the term used for the American Civil War throughout much of the South even today. Many on both sides – not just the South – felt that they were serving their states as much, if not more, than their central governments. Many of the states agreed; the state governments raising their own units, commissioning their officers, and supplying their men. Indeed, many of the units that fought the Civil War were supplied in large part by their own states rather than by the central government's quartermasters. Philip Katcher's fascinating text explores the uniforms of 32 states; from Alabama to Wisconsin.

American Civil War Armies 5: Volunteer Militia (Men-at-Arms, No 207)

ISBN: 0850458536
Author: Phillip Katcher / Ron Volstad
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

Uniformed volunteer units were raised by individuals, usually from an area's social élite who had enough spare money and time to spend on such enthusiasms. They voted on their unit designation, their officers and non-commissioned officers, their unit rules, and their uniform. Many future leaders learned their skills in these ranks, and volunteer militia units formed the core of many fighting units on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. With the help of numerous photographs and illustrations, including eight full page colour plates by Ron Volstad, Philip Katcher does a fine job of detailing the uniforms of the volunteer militia of the American Civil War.

Knight of Outremer Ad 1187-1344 (Osprey Military Warrior Series, No 18)

ISBN: 1855325551
Author: David Nicolle
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

After Saladin's great victory at the Battle of Hattin in 1137, Outremer, as medieval westerners called the remaining Latin or Catholic enclaves in the eastern Mediterranean, was no longer a threat to Islam. Its military elites preferred to live in peace, focusing on trade as much as on the defence of Christendom's holy places. In this, the first book in the English language to objectively study the knights of the Latin East, David Nicolle presents a well-balanced and informed account of the Western warriors who defended the Crusader territories for so long.

English Longbowman 1330-1515Ad (Warrior, No 11)

ISBN: 1855324911
Author: Clive Bartlett
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

The English military ascendancy which lasted from the mid-14th to the early 15th century was founded upon defensive tactics based on the use of the longbow. This weapon, distinctive in that it was used by English forces alone, was probably the most effective missile weapon of the Late Middle Ages: its arrow had the same penetrative ability as a modern day bullet and the bow's rate of fire was not equalled by any weapon used by English forces until the adoption of the Lee Enfield rifle at the beginning of the 20th century.

ISBN: 0850452562
Author: Angus McBride
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

By the end of the nineteenth century the fame of the Zulu was world-wide, and their army was one of the few non-European military organisations to have become the subject of serious historical study. Their very name is still synonymous with bravery, discipline and military skill. This excellent addition to Osprey's Men-at-Arms series tells the story of the Zulu's at war, from their rise to unrivalled power under the fearsome Shaka to the final devastating defeat against the British at Ulundi, detailing Zulu weapons and tactics, and the famous battles in which they fought.

As was the case in World War II, one of the greatest threats to Britain during World War I was the German U-boat menace. This book traces the development of the U-boat threat from the Brandtaucher, designed by Wilhelm Bauer, the father of the German submarine arm, in 1850, through to the commissioning of Germany's first U-boat to go into service, the U-1, in 1906. It then covers the main types of World War I U-boat, detailing the operational history of the U-boat service in depth, with a particular focus on the campaigns in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, as well as the slow build up of anti-submarine measures by the allies.

At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. In what would prove the vital naval campaign of the war, both sides fought for control of the river. While the Confederates relied on field fortifications and small gunboats, the Union built a series of revolutionary river ironclads. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years battling for control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war. This book explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they were fought.

The primary Union strategy during the American Civil War was a massive naval blockade of the entire Southern coastline of the Confederacy, and it was in the effort to counter this blockade that the Confederates developed their first submarines and torpedo boats. This book traces the development of these new technologies, including the CSS â?˜Little Davidâ?™ and â?˜Hunleyâ?™ - respectively the first torpedo boat and submarine to sink an enemy warship. The wreck of the â?˜Hunleyâ?™ was raised in 2000, and this is the first book ever to integrate details of its recovery with an account of Confederate submarines in action.

The Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) played a major role in World War II. The artillery found it necessary to mechanise some of its field pieces. Armoured cars were called upon to carry out tasks in addition to reonnaissance. Tank destroyers were designed to seek, and destroy enemy armour. Add to this fascinating array such oddities as spedy oversnow Aerosans (armoured, fast sledges) deployed by the Red Army, to enormous siege guns weighing over 100 tons, to small remotely controlled and tracked demolition vehicles, only six feet in length, to the massive and powerfully equipped armoured trains deployed by the Soviet Union and Germany.

Scottish Units in the World Wars (Elite, No 56)
by Mike Chappell, Lee Johnson (Editor)

Over the centuries of their existence the Scottish regiments of the British Army have gained a reputation in war that is the envy of all and which can be matched, or surpassed, by very few. The very description 'Scottish soldier' conjures up images ranging from the 'thin red streak tipped with a line of steel' of the 93rd Highlanders at Balaclava, and the charge of the Scots greys at Waterloo, to the more recent deeds of Scottish regiments in the Falkland Islands and the Persian Gulf. Mike Chappell chronicles the remarkable history of the Scottish units which fought in the two world wars.

The British Army 1914-18 (Men at Arms Series 81)
by R. Marrion

Between 1869 and 1874, Edward Cardwell, Gladstone's Secretary for War, undertook major reforms to modernise the British Army. The Crimean War, and campaigns in India, had revealed serious administrative and command shortcomings. Cardwell's legislation was aimed at curing these faults and served as the foundation of a new-style army. His successors put into practice further improvements in tactics, training and command structure and by the outbreak of war in 1914, the British Army had developed into one of the best professional fighting forces in Europe. This book details the development, composition and uniforms of this 'new' army.

Armies in East Africa 1914-18 (Men-at-Arms, 379)
by Peter Abbott, Raffaele Ruggeri (Illustrator)

One of the least-published but most interesting campaigns of the Great War was that fought in East Africa by forces of colonial troops - British Empire, German, Belgian and Portuguese. Short of resources due to the priority given to other fronts, European, African and Indian soldiers recorded epics of endurance as they hunted the outnumbered but brilliantly led German colonial forces across a vast, disease-ridden wilderness. The achievements of the German commander Paul von Lettow Vorbeck - the last German commander in the field to lay down his arms in 1918 - brought him fame and respect comparable to those won by Rommel in World War II. The events and the forces are described here in concise detail, and illustrated with rare photographs and striking colour plates.

Medieval Siege Weapons (1) Western Europe AD 585 -1385
(New Vanguard 58)

The Medieval era was a period of huge variety and invention in the field of siege warfare. Before the use of cannon and other gun-powder artillery, siege engines relied on assorted sources of power, from torsion 'energy storage' systems to man-power, counter-balances and others. This book reveals how the combinationof technological traditions from the Graeco-Roman world, Persia, India and above all China made a massive contribution to the development of siege techniques. Medieval military engineering was equally inventive in terms of mining, counter-mining, the breaking of walls, the use of noxious and chemical fumes and in the use of fire-weapons.

Medieval Siege Weapons (2) Byzantium, the Islamic World & India AD 476-1526
(New Vanguard 69)

The medieval period was one of the most inventive in military history when it came to non-gunpowder machine development. During this period, the pre-existing military-technological traditions from the ancient worlds were brought together. Three civilisations; Graeco-Roman World, Persia, India, and China, were primarily responsible for this evolution - the Late-Roman or Byzantine Empire, the Islamic World, and latterly the Mongol 'World Empire'. This book examines the resulting stone-throwing machines that used assorted power sources from torsion 'energy storage' systems, to manpowered and counterbalance sling devices, rockets et al.

Elite 97: The Kaiser's Warlords

ISBN: 1841765589
Author: Ronald Pawly
Publisher: Osprey Publishing (UK)

The turn of the 20th century saw Imperial Germany as essentially a militarist state, whose growing industrial resources and wealth were harnessed to the task of increasing German military power, at a time of aggressive expansionist diplomacy in competition with Britain and France. After her victories over Austria in the 1860s and France in 1870, Germany's General Staff enjoyed tremendous professional prestige throughout Europe, and was the model for all aspects of command and control. The German army was essentially that of Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony with smaller contingents from the lesser states. Its generals were the men who planned, initiated, and to a large extent controlled the course of World War I.

Посмотри по названиям - одна книга про 1000 - 1300 года , другая 1300 - 1500 года . Вопрос действительно не ахти ...

The Age of Charlemage
Men-at-Arms - 150

theageofcharlemage1ho.jpg

Most historians agree that the Carolingian Age, from the 8th to 10th centuries AD, represented one of the most important turning points in European history. It can be said with some certainty that early Carolingian military success was built on good leadership, adequate administration, and troops whose morale was almost consistently superb. It is also clear that the Carolingian army managed to adapt itself to face many and differing foes. This absorbing text by David Nicolle explores the organisation and history of the Carolingian Empire during the age of one of history's most romanticised and heroic figures - Charlemagne.
