Michael Hoppe & Tim Wheater - Wind Songs

In 1994, keyboardist Michael Hoppe and flautist Tim Wheater won accolades for their album The Yearning. For Wind Songs, the duo set the musical key to suit Wheater's many ethnic flutes, then improvised with no previous rehearsing or mindset.

The album opens with Between Cave and Cloud - mountains quake and skies shudder in extended OMs, a gently mournful lament for the earth. Wheater switches from Native American to silver flute for Silence of the Stars, as sleepy-eyed and seductive as Scheherazade, sparkling chimes signal outbursts of shooting stars, then a melody strokes with infinite tenderness. Stray Bird moves uptone with its greener feeling, like the bursting of an Irish spring.

Most cuts include songs from animals - eagle cries, chattering squirrels - while On Wings of Sleep lulls with a gentle brook. The tone throughout is like a nocturne: steady heartbeat, unfettered breathing, alert to reverence. Here, a troubled soul can find peace in the night. Richard Burmer added subtle synthesizer magic to the final mix.

Monica Ramos - Behind That Light

Swedish, Chilean born Monica Ramos is definitely not a traditional harpist. She is a modern artist who is tearing down traditional barriers, a harp virtuoso who has won the praise of both critics and public all over the world for her brilliant collection of compositions and interpretations.

Behind That Light includes some tracks that marry the harp's romantic sound to the driving grooves of modern dance music. This record generally reflects the sound of her current touring band, which includes bass, guitar, layers of percussion, and keyboards. That sound is gently rhythmic and at times almost classical.

Это не революция, это просто значительный прорыв на поприще отечественной электроники. Второй альбом московского электронщика Алексея Образцова приятно удивил глобальным отличием от первенца "Гольфстрим", вышедшего под названием DEEP OCEAN.

Имя восходящей звезды, по всей видимости, менее известно отечественной аудитории, чем, скажем, имена наших соотечественников из более популярных и коммерческих жанров. Но если вас интересует что-то новенькое и свежее на поприще серьезных электрических изысканий, если вы устали от повторов и плагиата под кисть мастеров, --вас ожидает приятный сюрприз.

Альбом КАРТИНЫ почти полностью концептуально выдержан и состоит из 5 произведений. У Алексея есть собственное, достаточно яркое, творческое лицо. Лишь порой можно упрекнуть в легкой аналогии с творчеством Роберта Майлза (PICTURE 2). Но такие мысли приходят в голову только один раз и только при прослушивании этого трека.
Определенно главенствующее место на альбоме занимает первая 14-тиминутная Картина Номер 1. Элементы Эмбиента плюс классические традиции мелодичной электроники в свойственной Алексею манере изысканной и утонченной красоты. Альбом создан явно не в развлекательных легких тонах и может рассматриваться как яркое и значительное событие на московской электронной сцене.

Tim Wheater - A Calmer Panorama

This is an ambient album in the best sense of the word. Flautist Tim Wheater combines nature sounds (birds, brook), gentle synth environments, and flutes to create a soothing, spiritual, and classy environment suitable for massage, relaxation, meditation, or background music.

Shower is the brighter, with sounds a little more sparkling with its wind chimes, birds, and hypnotic eddies of crystalline sounds (like an aum); a loon calls out occasionally, matching tone with the shakuhachi flute.

Fall features rounder, warmer, and heavier sounds. The shakuhachi flute seems to question, the silver flute calms, and a lower flute puffs out support like a fog horn.

This dynamic interplay in a garden of birds, chimes, and crickets keeps the piece very interesting if you care to pay attention to the melodies and not get swept away in some meditative state. Wheater's dreamy Zen album shows a lot of heart and sophistication.

Jewel Lake is probably best described as a mainstream new age electro-acoustic album, with Bill on electronic keyboards, piano, and bassoon, accompanied by oboe, flute, voice, and ethnic percussion.

Came to my attention through his ongoing 20-year-plus collaboration with clarinet superstar and Yale classmate Richard Stoltzman. Bill has played keyboards and bassoon on all of Stoltzman's RCA hits - Begin Sweet World, New York Counterpoint, and Innervoices - and written over 50% of the original music on the albums.

I've always felt that the ability to write melodies is one of the real benchmarks in music, regardless of style. As you'll hear throughout this album, Bill Douglas is naturally endowed with the gift of creating absolutely gorgeous, unforgettable melodies.

Not quite as obvious is his background in pop - his first band did Elvis covers in Canada in the '50s - his years as a classical bassoonist in the Toronto Symphony, his work as a jazz improviser, his stint as an avant garde composer at Cal Arts, or his "Rock Etudes" -- creative rhythm studies used by music educators around the world, not to mention his hilarious, over-the-edge concertizing with the BOULDER BASSOON BAND. What we have here is a truly eclectic musician.

For his Hearts of Space debut, we concentrated on Bill's melodic, space-creating ballads, but that didn't prevent him from including "Highland" and "Killarny," a couple of wonderfully joyous Irish folk dances (he says its his Scotch-Irish ancestry coming through), a darkly exotic Spanish/Moorish piece ("Karuna"), and an exquisitely beautiful song featuring soprano JANE GRIMES, based on an ancient Gaelic blessing ("Deep Peace").

Overall, Jewel Lake is probably best described as a mainstream new age electro-acoustic album, both in terms of emotional content and variety of source material.

Instrumentation is Bill on electronic keyboards, piano, and bassoon, plus fine performances on oboe, flute, vice, and ethnic percussion by several Boulder area musicians. It was a total pleasure to produce, and I'm confident that listeners are going to love it.
