A great heist soundtrack from one of the masters of the genre! Georges Garvarentz has cooked up some real winners over the years, and this is one of his best -- a blend of driving crime jazz themes, funky groovers, and a few tense dramatic numbers -- all served up with a level of class that recalls the best work at the time by Lalo Schifrin and Quincy Jones. Tracks are short and direct -- packing a great punch on the grooviest tunes, and laying back with a cool sophisticated edge on the others.

Sun R@ (listed as Dan & Dale) -- Batman & Robin -- 1966 -- Universe -- Bit 192
Holy Saturn! This is an incredibly rare album that has Ra & The Arkestra shilling for bucks by playing jazzy versions of cartoony themes -- wrapped up in a "Batman & Robin" package designed to cash in on the popularity of the mid 60s TV show! Ra plays Hammond B-3 on a number of cuts, and other players include Jimmy Owens, Tom McIntosh, and members of the Blues Project. The session was put together by Ed Bland -- director of the Cry Of Jazz, who later went onto arrange and produce a lot of weird funky records in New York. Wild -- and with a great cover! Titles include "Batman Theme", "Joker Is Wild", "Robin's Theme", "Flight Of The Batman", "Penguin Chase", and "Batman & Robin Over The Roofs".

The session took place after the European tour, so we were used to playing together. We arrived at the Poste Parisien around ten, Jeanne Moreau was there, and we had a drink together.
Miles was very relaxed, as if the music he was playing wasn't that important. It was only later that I leaned he'd already been to a screening, and that he'd known about the project for several weeks. So he knew exactly what he wanted, and he also knew what he wanted from us, which is very much to his credit.
What was typical of this session was the absence of a specific theme. This was new for the period, especially with the soundtrack for a film

Spy jazz kickstarted by the James Bond craze is a whole genre of its own. Featuring lurid covers usually of spy types aiming a gun and a woman in a bikini this cover is typical of the genre.
This has the usual James Bond covers and one or two related tunes such as Our Man Flint an American version of Bond featuring the late James Coburn. Having said that this is a good example of the genre and is obviously very popular judging by nearly 600 downloads so far.
I don't know much about Elliott Fisher or his Orchestra but it probably featured the usual session musos. So don your trenchcoat and revisit Bang Bang Bang.

MICHEL LEGRAND | LA DAME DANS L'AUTO AVEC DES LUNETTES ET UN FUSIL | 70's |
"A lost soundtrack treasure from Michel Legrand -- the groovy score to a film whose English title is "The Lady In The Car With Glasses & A Gun"! The album's got Legrand working at the height of his 60s soundtrack powers -- blending together jazz, jerk, pop, and mod elements -- superbly coming together with that fluid style that he brought to some of his more famous work. The whole thing's great, filled with lively 60s tunes that really groove -- and Petula Clark even sings on 2 tunes, one in French and one in English! Titles include "Je Roule", "Jerk Les Avignons", "Le Pont Du Garde", "14 Juillet 70", "O No Ma To Pe", "Le Fusil", and "Les Lunettes". "

FROM The Needlebeard
Lalo Schiffrin | There's A Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin' On | 1968
Included for the sake of completeness, as this isn't really a soundtrack record, but we're often asked about it due to Secret Code appearing on many a soundtrack compilation album. So what is this LP? It's a Schifrin solo album, obviously when he was at the peak of his 60s popularity, and equally obviously put together after a few too many nights on the hallucinogens. But that doesn't make it a bad album - indeed, far from it. Plenty of very groovy 60s cuts that wouldn't be out of place on any of his better 60s OSTs, like Mannix or Bullitt. Some more sentimental pieces sit alongside harder-edged funky instrumentals, and of course Secret Code is good enough to merit the price of the album anyway. Good stuff.

These Records Are BenT!
Henry Mancini revived only two pieces from the T.V. series for this film score. The Peter Gunn Theme, of course, and Dreamsville. The rest of the score is new work, but very much in the cool jazzy feel of the original material. One track that's recognizable still today is The Monkey Farm. That appeared (in a cover version by The Tiki Tones) on the Del-Fi comp from the 90s, Shots in the Dark. If you haven't picked up that disc, order it. It's well worth it. I've bought it three times. Once for me, and twice for gifts.
I love the way they worked Lyrics (by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans) into the Peter Gunn Theme for the last track, BYE BYE. It kinda makes me think of Bill Murray's lounge-singer version of the Star Wars theme.
Mancini was able to gather most of the original band from the T.V. Series to record the film score. Plas Johnson is on Electric Sax, Jimmy Rowles on Piano, Bud Shank on Baritone Sax, Ted Nash on Alto Sax and flute, Vincent DeRosa on french Horn, and Ray Brown on Bass. Larry Bunker plays vibes, Pete Candoli plays trumpet, Bob Bain plays guitar, Dick Nash plays trombone, and Shelly Manne beats the drums.

Roy Bud | GET CARTER | 1971
Soundtrack to the cult crime-thriller starring Michael Caine. A brilliantly eclectic score from Roy Budd. Music tracks are interspersed with some great dialogue from the movie. Highlights for us are the Main Theme, The Girl in the Car, Love is a Four Letter Word, Hallucinations (the beautiful instrumental!) and Plaything. Hardly off our stereo - super!
