Пианист и певец Томас Оттен начал исполнять камерную музыку еще в юности, как правило, аккомпанируя другим вокалистам и лишь по настоянию друзей отважившийся присоединиться к вокальному ансамблю. Не замыкаясь в рамках камерной музыки, Томас исполнял и произведения современных композиторов (особенный успех выпал на долю «Мессы для органа», написанную специально для Оттена Жан Жюленн). В конце 90х годов Оттен познакомился с композитором Фредериком Момоном, вместе с которым был записан альбом «Close To Silence», в течение нескольких недель разошедшийся тиражом в 100 тысяч. Момон написал музыку, сделал аранжировки, исполнил партии клавишных и спродюсировал альбом. Спустя четыре года поклонники Оттена вновь могут наслаждаться великолепным голосом певца - в марте 2003 года вышел второй альбом тандема Оттен-Момон «Portraits».

After coming to California from rural Chicago at age 10, David immersed himself in all the music he could find. Spending high school and college in various bands and performance groups, he then criss-crossed the country several times playing popular music. He finally settled down to concentrate on developing his own sound, and when computers and instruments could finally communicate to each other, David knew his time had come. He could now hear a good portion of what he could imagine.

The Yearning: Romances For Alto Flute

Each "Romance" is individually dedicated to the celebrated women featured in a series of photographs by photographer, E.O. Hoppe' (1878-1972), Michael's grandfather.

A sense of yearning and passion runs through each piece, giving the album a consistent mood all the way through. All of the pieces are slow and low-keyed. The alto flute sounds like it has about the same range as a cello, and, that same lovely, melancholy feel that can come from a cello is here as well.

Hoppe' keeps his synthsizer washes in the background, and they serve to enhance the sounds of the flute and provide some subtle harmonies and gentle rhythms. Haunting, ethereal, elegant, and emotional are words that come to mind as I listen to this aural work of art.
