Al DiMeola continues to broaden his musical horizons with Flesh on Flesh, his fourth release for the Telarc recording label. The great guitarist is joined by two members of his World Sinfonia acoustic group -- Gumbi Ortiz on percussion and Mario Parmisano on keyboards -- in addition to such stellar musicians as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, flutist Alejandro Santos, and bassist Anthony Jackson, who recorded with DiMeola on his best-selling Elegant Gypsy album in the mid-'80s. Offering classic guitar lines on an array of guitars (including a vintage Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, and Conde-Romano acoustic), Al DiMeola is memorable, timeless, and true to the beauty, culture and sensual imagery that inspired him to compose and arrange these eight great songs. Any time the likes of Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola and Jean-Luc Ponty are assembled, there is a good chance the results are going to be impressive. Clarke and DiMeola had played together in the legendary Return to Forever, producing some of the most intense playing in all of fusion; Jean-Luc Ponty had also made several excellent, very diverse recordings. The chops of these three musicians are pretty much unsurpassed in the industry, which in itself makes Rite of Strings worthy of a listen. The real treat, however, is in the song selections. Three of DiMeola's more recent compositions are here, including the uplifting "Chilean Pipe Song." On this song, Clarke and Ponty's dual-bow sound provides a nice backdrop to DiMeola's introduction before DiMeola and Ponty state the melody together. Ponty has always been one of the more interesting violinists, mostly because he experiments with the instrument's tonal possibilities. His plucking introduction to "Renassaince" and the strumming on "Change of Life" are evidence of this. Clarke's finest moment comes on his own beautiful "Topanga," on which his bow playing is enough to evoke tears. This is a classic recording that should not be missed; the integrity, musicianship, compositions, and improvisations are all first-rate. ~ Review by Robert Taylor, All Music Guide ~

Rebecca Reneé Olstead (born June 18, 1989) is an American actress and singer.

Olstead was born in Houston, Texas to Christopher Eric Olstead and Rebecca Lynn Jeffries. As a child actress, she made films and commercials from age eight onwards. Since 2002, she has appeared in the TV sitcom Still Standing. She also had a small part in the 2004 film 13 Going on 30. In 2000, at the age of 11, Olstead recorded her first album, Stone Country as well as an EP, Unleashed. Both were privately released on her own record label.

In 2004, Olstead released an eponymous album of jazz songs and pop standards for Warner Brothers Records to good reviews; since her previous releases had limited distribution, this album was considered her true debut. She subsequently performed in Berlin during the Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005. Reportedly her musical talent was discovered by composer David Foster, who produced her 2004 album. She later performed with Foster on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Reneé Olstead is the self-titled major label debut album by teen actress-singer Reneé Olstead, released in 2004. This album differed from Olstead's previous, privately issued country-western releases in that she performs pop and jazz standards. The album, which was co-produced by David Foster, has sold more than 166,000 copies.

Back in 2002, producer David Foster oversaw the debut disc of a young jazz/pop singer named Michael Bublé. With his handsome looks and Sinatra-like voice, Bublé quickly saw his star begin to rise and the success of his disc kicked off a mini-revival of old standards and big band singers. Striking while the iron was hot, Foster fed the flame by introducing an even younger female counterpart to Bublé. Reneé Olstead was a 14-year-old actress mostly known for her co-starring role in the CBS television series Still Standing, but while acting has been her day job since childhood, Olstead has also dabbled in music. Unlike Bublé, who was studying classic songs at a young age with his grandfather, Olstead first latched onto traditional country music and at the age of ten and released Stone Country, which found her singing mediocre tunes in a hiccupped, down-home accent. Four years and a 180-degree turn later, Olstead discovers her inner ingénue with the assistance of Svengali Foster and released her major label debut of pop and jazz standards. The results have the same lovely, glossy sheen that Foster tweaked to perfection on Natalie Cole's Unforgettable album, and Olstead's newfound voice is a vast improvement from her faux twang days. With a voice that is reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's singing debut in Moulin Rouge, Olstead sounds more like a young, bubbly starlet than a newly discovered diva. There is no question that she has a pretty voice and is more than capable of performing undemanding standards like "Taking a Chance on Love," however, her voice lacks the depth and experience truly needed to tackle more difficult song like "Summertime" or "Sunday Kind of Love." In taking on Barry Manilow's "Meet Me, Midnight" she dives in with gusto but ends up barely treading water mid-song with a scat section that sounds uncomfortable and forced. Age is certainly a factor in making these songs sound convincing and, for the most part, Foster smartly chose songs that do not reach too far beyond her young years. This helps to make a song like "Someone to Watch Over Me" sound like a sweet, teenage fairytale. On the other hand, the sensuality of Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis" is far too mature for her to grasp at this time. She does much better on the Norah Jones-styled original "A Love That Lasts" as the song's quiet demeanor compliments Olstead's vocals, making her sound comfortable and natural. It is going to take more time and experience for her to sound as convincing on songs like "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," but Foster has given her a great crash course and that helps to make her debut disc a pleasant listen. On her first full-length Christmas album, pianist/vocalist Diana Krall delivers a smoky, sophisticated, and slightly melancholy album perfectly suited to accompany egg nog cocktails and romantic afterglow holiday affairs. Although there isn't anything unexpected on Christmas Songs -- Irving Berlin's "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" is as close to obscure as it gets -- Krall coos life into such standards as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." It also doesn't hurt that she gains top-notch support from the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, whose urbane arrangements help bring to mind similar works by such iconic vocalists as Nat King Cole, June Christy, and Frank Sinatra. But it's not all deep sighs and bedroom eyes; on the contrary, Krall keeps things swinging with such uptempo numbers as the joyous "Jingle Bells," "Winter Wonderland," and the Blossom Dearie-inflected "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." It has long been a well-known "secret" that altoist Eric Marienthal, who is best known for his association with Chick Corea's Elektric Band and with his own groups, is a great straight-ahead jazz player, too. He has made occasional guest spots through the years and shown that he is a more versatile player than originally expected. For Got You Covered, Marienthal desired to record a set live in the studio, and he utilized some of his favorite musicians, with guest pianist Chick Corea playing a duet with Marienthal on "My One and Only Love." Unfortunately, Marienthal mostly plays it safe, not digging very far into these songs beyond their melodies. It is pretty unusual getting to hear him play "I've Got the World on a String" and "Moody's Mood for Love," but the latter is a note-for-note re-creation of James Moody's original solo and nothing more. Everything about this set comes across as safe and unadventurous. The overall results are pleasant and reasonably pleasing as background music, but Eric Marienthal is capable of much more. ~ review by Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Fourplay is back in business with album number four. This time former Crusader Larry Carlton joins up with Bob James, Harvey Mason and Nathan East to deliver another splendid collection of smooth jazz penned by the group members themselves.
This time Lee Ritenour has opted out but Larry Carlton is a more than capable replacement and contributes two of the compositions on '4'. His wife Michelle adds her velvet vocal touch alongside Harvey Junior/s wife Heather.
El Debarge (who can forget his vocal on the Debarge classic 'All this love ') Babyface Edmonds, Shanice and Kevyn Lettau also join the band for '4', the former delivering an excellent rendition of Marvin's masterpiece 'Sexual healing' from 1982.
This has all the trimmings of a Fourplay album with guitar and piano riffs mingling with soft vocals to exotic and clever rhythms.
Larry Carlton's contributions 'Charmed I'm sure' and 'Swamp jazz' are right out of Carlton's top drawer , the man seems to slide all his notes in two chord structures. This distinctive style was prevalent on his 1996 outing 'The Gift'.
The killer cut on a wonderful album is 'Someone to love' which is a slow piano/guitar smoocher with excellent incidental vocals from Babyface Edmonds, Nathan East and Shanice ( I sure like your smile ) Wilson.
One of the great 'unsung hero' composers of the CJAZZ scene is Harvey Mason who has written three of the albums ten tracks including the 'Hill Street Blues' type cut entitled 'Slow slide', a late night trip to the midnight hour. Harvey has been all aross the waterfront in a glittering career but is more renowned for his rhythmical contribution. This clearly highlights his all round musical ability which is similar to his contemporary Alphonse Mouzon.
All in all, no real surprises here but definitely a 'Must Have' item to any smooth jazz fans collection.

Об альбоме
...элегантный, хотя и довольно предсказуемый фьюжн с легко выделяемой латино-составляющей. Какие-то неожиданные отступления от уютной и стильной накатанной колеи демонстрирует лишь финальная "Shadow Of Your World" с диагональными пробежками по органной клавиатуре и грозными гитарными проигрышами между куплетами. Акустическая ритм-гитара Леонида чиста и безукоризненна, соло Эла - вообще верх совершенства и сдержанности. Все песни спеты по-английски, лишь в задумчивой "If I'll Get A Chance...", зажигательной "Tango" и уже упомнавшейся "Blue River" проскакивают две-три русские фразы.

Eden Atwood, the Memphis-born and Montana-raised daughter of the late composer and arranger Hubbard Atwood, is a throwback to an era when lyrics were something to be savored and caressed. Hence, she has a soft spot for the torch song and the big ballad. Fortunately, she also has the requisite vocal equipment to deliver them.
The first thing you notice about Atwood is her youth and cheeky self-confidence. Yet she is trapped in a time warp of sorts. Although clearly, in both attitude and mannerisms, a woman of the '90s -- and a child of the rock generation -- her musical instincts and reference points belong to another era. She has said that she is "incredibly happy" listening to the music of the big bands. "Then the minute I walk outside, it's 1992!" Atwood has managed to evoke the music of that earlier period while developing within the jazz genre her own distinctive style.
At the age of 22, Eden has produced a record that celebrates beginnings. This is only fitting since she, too, is at the cusp of what one expects will be a full and satisfying career. "No One Ever Tells You" is a work of hope and optimism but also one of exquisite pain that, under its sunny veneer, masks a surprisingly melancholy heart. Listen to the plaintive vocals of "Ballad of the Sad Young Men" and try not to be impressed by the artist's sensitive delivery.

One could go on: the effortless scat singing in "Old Devil Moon"; the playful sense of humor in "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby". Atwood is at her brassy and confident best in "Cow Cow Boogie" while her mood turns pensive and somber in "Too Late Now". In a breathtakingly beautiful rendition of her father's "I Was the Last One to Know" she assumes the persona of a singer who has seen too much and hurt too much yet is not quite ready to give up. Finally, in "Nothing's Changed," which she wrote, Atwood appears to have inherited her father's talent for craftsmanship. It's a fine song -- touching, melodic and lyrically sophisticated.
"No One Ever Tells You" proves Eden Atwood is an exciting new presence on the jazz scene. Chicagoans already know that.
Now the world will too!

Dave's True Story is a jazzy pop combo featuring Dave Cantor's intelligent, sometimes quirky lyrics, Kelly Flint's smooth-as-silk vocals and Jeff Eyrich's acoustic upright bass laying a solid rhythm track beneath it all. They have built an impressive body of accomplishments since their formation in 1994. Winners of the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award as well as numerous and various other surprising accomplishments, they have performed nationally and internationally to wide critical and commercial acclaim.

Dave and Kelly met in 1989 through the Fast Folk group of songwriters. Chanteuse, Kelly Flint, a teenage Joni Mitchell freak turned twenty-something fan of Keely Smith and Lulu, had been singing backup around town and feeding her dreams as a waitress at the Cookery, an old cabaret where she befriended blues legend Alberta Hunter. David Cantor, a one-time student of the Berklee College of Music and an avid songwriter, started performing his offbeat jazzy songs at open-mics at places like the Speakeasy. Kelly and Dave passed each other like two ships in the night until a snowy evening in 1992 when they cemented their friendship over shots of Jack Daniels at the old Village Corner. Kelly proposed that Dave teach her a song and the rest, as they say, is history. Well, not quite. Jeff Eyrich signed on in 1998, bringing his upright bass and considerable production experience into the picture.

Dave's True Story is an independent band whose notoriety has been built mainly by word of mouth and hundreds of live shows.

Dave's True Story's smart, sexy sound blows a cool breeze through the world in which we live with its fourth release, NATURE.

Like all great art, Dave's True Story stands outside of its era, with a sensibility that encompasses the past, lives in the present, and hints at the future. The New York City group utilizes a stylish, elegant jazz/pop sound that contrasts the thorny thickets of songwriter/guitarist Dave Cantor's deliciously devilish lyrics. DTS's resident siren, Kelly Flint, coos former playwright Cantor's crafty, acerbic missives as if they were tender messages of love, but songs about psychic readings, beatnik posers, and prescription medication are seldom the stuff of late-night saloon songs.

Over the course of three albums, enough people have noticed Dave's True Story for the band to sell over 50,000 records without the benefit of a major label or big press machine. Instead they've been winning hearts and minds in a more subversive, covert manner, flying under the big boys' radar even as they've been lauded everywhere from the NY Times to CNN and had their songs included in the feature film KISSING JESSICA STEIN. With the help of DTS bassist and producer Jeff Eyrich, however, the group's hush-hush hipster renown seems likely to expand to a bigger slice of the pie, via the latest Dave's True Story disc, NATURE.
In a world primed for sophisticated, jazzy pop by the likes of Norah Jones and Diana Krall, Dave's True Story injects the crucial element of sharply observed irony with NATURE's batch of mordant, masterfully crafted tunes, from "World in Which We Live," where global ennui is wedded to a sinuous bossa nova beat, to "I Lost my Nature," in which the lovelorn protagonist searches for missing mojo against bongo-driven Beat-era jazz grooves. While previous albums featured more upbeat, swinging arrangements, NATURE finds Dave's True Story playing it cool, letting Cantor's songs, Flint's voice, and Eyrich's sterling sonic framework tell the story of a sensibility too sharp for mere "lounge" chic but too top-shelf to be crammed into a rock & roll pigeonhole.

So when the Wall Street Journal observes that "Harry Connick Jr. and John Pizzarelli should have new material that's as witty as what Mr. Cantor creates," they're not consigning Dave's True Story to an Adult Contemporary niche market, they're simply wracking their brains for artists with enough old-school spit and polish to do justice to the sparkle of a sound that's at once postmodern and timeless. With the release of NATURE, though, it's likely that admirers will stop vainly searching for comparisons and simply mark Dave's True Story as sui generis, a musical island unto themselves, offering a shrewd, sometimes salacious, but strangely luxurious escape from the banal world of mainstream pop music.
